Detailed description of Williamsburg National Golf Club

Williamsburg National Golf Club, now has two 18-hole Semi-Private, golf courses located in the Williamsburg, Virginia area.

Williamsburg National, honor two nearby historic sites with their Nicklaus designed Jamestown Course that opened for play in 1995 and their newer Yorktown Course designed by Tom Clark that opened for play in 2007.

The Jamestown Course measures 7,000 yards from the championship tees and is Par 72. The Jamestown has served as host to the PGA Tour Michelob Open Qualifier on three occasions. It has received numerous awards including “One of the Ten Best Courses you can play in Virginia” by Golf Digest Magazine.

The Yorktown Course is a 7,000 yard championship course. When asked to comment on the design, Tom Clark said, “It is a course of traditional design and with no gimmicks”. However GolfCourseRanking would like you to take note that two of the last three holes measure over 600 yards. Ouch!

Course needs some TLC- water, fertilizer etc. It could be a resort level course with the correct grounds and green attention.

Bottom line: I won't play again

Our group of travelling seniors played here 3-14-14 as part of a getaway from the hostile north. Paid $45 with the Tee Time book, which is a fair price for the Yorktown course (Jamestown was closed for aeration and maintenance).

Pro shop guy did not start us off with a good impression: he was, at best, indifferent. Starter, on the other hand, was very cordial, and brightened the mood considerably. Similarly, the young lady in the bar/restaurant was very professional and positive.

Course itself is pretty nice, but nothing exceptional in my view, considering the area, which abounds in extraordinary courses, like the Golden Horseshoe pair, Colonial Heritage, or even the Traditions family of layouts. Design is straightforward, fairly flat with some rolling terrain, but no big hills. A previous rater commented on the lack of hole diagrams either on the scorecard or at the tee box: I second that, seems like a ploy to sell yardage books, and they are needed if you're a newbie, as our group was. There are houses along some fairways, and they're pretty close on a couple of holes, which detracts from the exclusive "feel" of the course. Fairways are generally receptive, and wide enough for the most part. Bunkers are plentiful, but not especially intrusive as they are on some other courses in the area, and they were well-maintained and playable. Greens are largish, and they were outstanding the day we played: quick and true, with minimal bumpiness, which is unusual for this time of year. Because of distances between holes, I'd say the course is not walkable.

Overall, a nice course, and one worth a look.

The course played short due to tremendous roll. We played preferred lies due to the condition. The round was enjoyable.

Greens in dreadful condition, wasn't like that a few years ago when I played here. Hopefully time will fix them.

I would recommend both courses at Williamsburg National. Only complaint is not having layout of courses on scorecards or at tee boxes.

We were told earlier in the week that greens would be aerated the following week. When we showed up Saturday they were aerated. We did get a $20 discount, but we had meticulously checked out courses which had not yet been aerated to play those only. Bummer. Our tee time we remembered was for 8 am. When we arrived the pro shop said, no it's 9 am. Cool, we can practice and putt. Wrong - no balls on the range and the practice green is like the beach. Then to our surprise the starter comes looking for us say 'where have you been, it's 8 am!'. We say no yardage book. No hole layout on score card. Had no idea how far some spots on the course were so needless to say we ended up some places we didn't want to play. Overall it's an OK course, but I wouldn't go out of my way.l

Played the newer Yorktown 18 for the first time. Excellent design, very playable for all levels of golfer. Have played the older Jamestown 18 several times, and liked Yorktown just a bit more.

Staff very courteous, friendly and helpful. Course in excellent shape. Excellent practice facilities. Weather that day was mid-80s with fair humidity. Teed off at 2:30, course was basically empty. There are two courses, Jamestown and Yorktown. I played Jamestown. I truly enjoyed the experience.
